The Disney Princess Headache by Jofrenchie The Disney Princess Headache by Jofrenchie
If you are anything like me, when you're tired you get distracted by very trivial things. And what's more is that said trivial things become a huuuuge issue to your poor exhausted brain. So instead of doing something constructive with your dwindling levels of time and energy, you decide to throw yourself into a project.
This is the tired-brain project I undertook today and on which I actually spent several hours (because I kept forgetting the info I'd just looked up... *rolls eyes*).
So enjoy the fruit of my labour! ^___^

Ever noticed how there seems to be great confusion as to which animated heroine is a Disney character or not, and which one really is a princess as opposed to just being part of the Disney princess bratpack? I have. And it bugged the hell out of me, so I went to find out.
Each list is in order of movie first to last published, and is not an exhaustive list of all Disney heroines, just the most popular ones.

1. Heroines by Disney

1. Snow White (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs)
2. Cinderella (Cinderella)
3. Alice Pleasence Liddell (Alice In Wonderland)
4. Tinker Bell (Peter Pan)
5. Aurora (Sleeping Beauty)
6. Eilonwy (The Black Cauldron)
- co-produced with Silver Screen Partners II
7. Ariel (The Little Mermaid)
- co-produced with Silver Screen Partners II
8. Belle (Beauty And The Beast)
- co-produced with Silver Screen Partners IV
9. Jasmine (Aladdin)
10. Pocahontas (Pocahontas)
11. Esmeralda (The Hunchback Of Notre Dame)
12. Megara (Hercules)
13. Fa Mulan (Mulan)
14. Jane Porter (Tarzan)
15. Kidagakash "Kida" Nedakh (Atlantis: The Lost Empire)
16. Giselle (Enchanted)
- co-produced with Right Coast Entertainment & Josephson Entertainment
17. Tiana (The Princess And The Frog)
18. Rapunzel (Tangled)
19. Merida (Brave)
- co-produced with Pixar Animation Studios

2. Heroines NOT by Disney

1. Lady Amalthea (The Last Unicorn)
- produced by Rankin/Bass Productions & Incorporated Television Company (ITC)
2. Odette (The Swan Princess)
- produced by Nest Family Entertainment & Rich Animation Studios
3. Thumbelina (Thumbelina)
- produced by Don Bluth, distributed by Twentieth Century Fox & Warner Brothers
4. Anastasia (Anastasia)
- produced by Twentieth Century Fox
5. Ella (Happily N'Ever After)
- produced by Lionsgate & Vanguard Films

Underlined are the characters that Disney lists as being part of their official "Princess" franchise.

3. Princesses by birth or marriage

1. SNOW WHITE (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs) ... birth
2. CINDERELLA (Cinderella) ... marriage
3. AURORA (Sleeping Beauty) ... birth
4. Eilonwy (The Black Cauldron) ... birth
5. ARIEL (The Little Mermaid) ... birth
6. JASMINE (Aladdin) ... birth (daughter of a sultan)
7. POCAHONTAS (Pocahontas) ... birth (daughter of a tribe chief who inherited the title, as opposed to being elected to the position, which make him an equivalent to "king")
8. Kidagakash "Kida" Nedakh (Atlantis: The Lost Empire) ... birth
9. TIANA (The Princess And The Frog) ... marriage
10. RAPUNZEL (Tangled) ... birth
11. Merida (Brave) ... birth
12. Odette (The Swan Princess) ... birth
13. Thumbelina (Thumbelina) ... marriage
14. Anastasia (Anastasia) ... birth

4. NON-royal heroines

1. Alice Pleasence Liddell (Alice In Wonderland)
2. Tinker Bell (Peter Pan)
3. BELLE (Beauty And The Beast)
Belle is never actually seen marrying Prince Adam (The Beast) in the film.
5. Esmeralda (The Hunchback Of Notre Dame)
6. Megara (Hercules)
Isn't seen marrying Hercules in the film, but is married to him however in the TV show "Hercules", episode "Hercules And The Yearbook". But because Hercules abandons his status of "Prince Of The Gods" to be with her, her marriage to him is not of a royal nature.
7. FA MULAN (Mulan)
8. Jane Porter (Tarzan)
9. Giselle (Enchanted)

10. Lady Amalthea (The Last Unicorn)
11. Ella (Happily N'Ever After)

~ THE END ~

You raise a point that has plagued fans of Disney for a long time, but the answer is sadly not one that makes you understand it or even feel good about the company.

Marketability and image.

When the princess franchise was first brought together, the folks at Disney selected the most popular princesses for the lineup, ones that would sell well with toys and products. It also meant that princesses from movies that didn't do well in the box office were left out. Hence why Elionwy and Kida were left out, and Mulan was in. Her movie did well and made money, and theirs did not, or at least not the amount Disney was hoping for. In fact, their films are mostly swept under the rug, and their image is kept intact.

It's not entirely fair, but it's how the company works.

But wouldn't Belle be a princess through marriage? :?
Reply
:iconjofrenchie:
Jofrenchie Featured By Owner May 28, 2012
She would be, if she does indeed marry. But the film never actually shows or confirms that a marriage takes place. Maybe Disney will bring out a new film featuring Belle married, or about to get married. But until then, technically, we have yet to see her married to a prince.

Oh, I also don't agree with Meg's placement, if we're sticking to the Disney interpretation. Like Belle, we never see her get married. She does end up with Hercules, who is technically a god, but that does not mean he's a prince, so she's not a princess. Even then, he gives up his godliness so that he can be with Meg, thus cutting off the ties.

Oh thank you for that! I haven't watched Hercules myself, so this is new information I need to look into. If it never actually confirmed that Meg marries him, then that changes everything!

Update: Apparently Meg marries Hercules in the show (didn't even know there was a show!). So you're right, she's not yet married at the end of the film but does in the TV series "Hercules: The Animated Series", which I've checked is also made by Disney. Ah here we go, the episode is called "Hercules And The Yearbook" ([link]).

Do you think that makes her a princess though? I mean, I always figured they WOULD get married, but he gave up being a god to be with her... kind of like giving up the crown, I think.

You know what, I'll look into that. If he gave up his position, even more so if it was before they were married, then she never becomes a princess to begin with!

Yes, it happens at the very end of the movie, where there wasn't even a hint at marriage, and definitely before the TV series came out :)

I TOTALLY agree with all in this project (except for Pocahontas... I'm just not sure if you can consider her royalty)!! I really like that you put Belle in the non-royalty section!! My mom and I actually had a discussion about that not too long ago... we just refer to her as "the Beast's floozy" haha

Chief Tribe (when the title is inherited, rather than someone being democratically elected to the position) is the same as King, just another word for it.

I did consider adding Sally but upon reading up about that film, it turns out Disney only re-redistributed it. Originally it was a Touchstone Pictures production.

Ah, I entered the comment before I'd finished. ^-^" Ahem, anyway, I was going to say that although Touchstone is owned by Disney, they didn't originally deem it to be of a similar enough vein to their usual material to release it under the "Disney" title. That was my thinking process at least when making this. I guess she does deserve to be included though.

It's ambiguous. At the end of Beauty & The Beast most people assume that they both get married, but technically the film never says that they do. So we can't say for sure, yes she married him. Just like we can't say for sure that Mulan ended up marrying Shang either, as it's not shown nor mentioned in the film.

The only errors I see on this list:

--Wendy isn't on it
--Belle married (or is implied to have married) The Beast/Prince Adam, making her a princess by marriage.

Good list though~
